March Week One

March Week One
:
This we we used several photographs to spark memories and keep our conversation going, focusing on asking lots of questions and making tons of comments.  To check your grammar, you may want to take this quiz about memory related expressions.  You also may be interested in the explanation between remember and remind.

Listening:
For learners, try the excercise from Breaking News English about how being biligual may delay dementia.  You can adapt the speed and level of text.

For original version, I recommen the episode from To the Best of Our Knowledge about Memory and Forgetting, specifically the segment about a woman who suffers from a rare condition in which she never fogets anything!  Available to listen with transcript.

Reading:
Moving on to reading, learners could try an article about how a new treatment can prevent or even reverse Alzheimer's or about how cell phones may affect memory.

If you're looking for something in original version, try the BBC article about whether it would be ethical to implant false memories in therapy, or the essay All the Things that Remind Me of Her.

Writing:
Think of things that trigger different memories for you -- songs, smells, tastes.  Describe this feeling and experience with strong adjectives.
Best,
Kelly

February Week Five

This week we talked about survival, basing our conversation on a movement sweeping the U.S. called "preppers," people who are preparing for imminent war, disaster, or Apocalypse.

Listening:
For learners, try the ESL video quiz about Preppers or Desert Island Survival from British Council.

For original version, check out some clips from episodes of the National Geographic Channel's Doomsday Preppers or listen to Meet the Preppers.

Reading:
Moving on to reading, learners could try an article about someone who survived in the Andes.

If you're looking for something in original version, check out the New Yorker article about Doomsday Prep for the Super Rich or Here's What Disaster Preppers Pack to Survive 72 hours.

Writing
This weekend for writing, I'd like you to get creative! Write a story of survival. Be detailed about what happens and how your characters get through it!
Best,
Kelly
